We're raising funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities SEQ!

Fit for Families is a partnered fitness competition which will help raise needed funds and support to ill children and their families while they stay at Ronald McDonald House in Southbank.

Our story:

At week 30 of Fiona's pregnancy, an incidental scan discovered something that would change our lives forever and we were referred to the Mater Hospital for weekly scans, but with no answers. Then on the 13th of July, Fiona and I were advised to move to Brisbane for an indefinite time just in case our son, Rafael came early and the medical team believed he would need surgery as soon as he was born.

On the 1st of August, Rafael was born but was sent immediately into ICU for surgery later that day. A few days after surgery we finally got some answers and we were told he was born with a Meconium Cyst which caused by a rupture of his bowels. From here, the head surgeon mentioned to us that he would need a second surgery to repair the hole and to remove the cyst. However, this meant he would need to rest and Rafael could not feed for at least 6 weeks and after the second surgery he would still need to recover. Then we could begin to slowly introduce feeding if everything went well, and hopefully go home with no complications.

Obviously, Fiona and I dropped everything so we could stay by his bedside at the NICU followed by the Children's Hospital as he became older until we were told to go home. While we were waiting, Rafael experienced multiple other procedures and interventions to prepare him for his second surgery. For example, two anaesthetics, picc and central lines, x-ray studies, multiple blood tests and a blood transfusion.

After 6 long weeks and on the eve of his second surgery, the medical team did one final x-ray study to assist them on where to begin the surgery. However, the medical team who had been with us since day one couldn't believe what they found and told us that Rafael is healthy, everything is working normally and he won't need his second surgery! Meaning, the hole in his bowel repaired itself and the remainder of the cyst collapsed away.

From there, Rafael was able to commence feeding and we were finally able to go home as a family after 7 weeks in hospital.

Our little boy not only showed us that miracles do happen, but he showed us his strength, smarts, determination and taught us so much while we were waiting to go home.

We are forever thankful to all of our family and friends and their support during this time, but also to Ronald McDonald House in South Bank who looked after us with meals, activities and accommodation for 68 days.

On average, it costs Ronald McDonald House Charities South East Queensland $160 to accommodate a family for one night, so please give generously.

Therefore, the goal for Fit for Families will be to raise $10, 880 or 68 days, the total length of time we were in Brisbane!

For people that do not know, Ronald McDonald House is a charity that supports ill children and their families with not only accommodation, but also with food and a variety of activities during their stay.

Thank you for helping us make a difference to children and their families!
